Welcome to the second part of the Samaya Ayurveda Cleanser Review. Samaya means ‘balance.
The first part is here focuses on the cleanser itself, it’s benefits and ingredients. In this part it’s all about Ayureveda, the benefits, what are doshas and how to find out what your dosha is.
What is Ayurveda and What’s my Dosha?
- Ayurveda is an ancient mind-body health system and was developed in India over 5000 years ago. Ayurveda is based on the science of Ayur (life) and Veda (knowledge) with the principles that the mind and body are connected and one can look holistically at their lifestyle to achieve better balance.
- I’ve always been a big fan since I went on an Ayurvedic retreat many years ago in Kent. It was a divine experience – I had body and facial treatments according to my dosha type, Vata and food was all prepared based on my dosha too. I’m not so keen on the bitter foods, I prefer salty and sweet stuff so they cooked the dishes according to my doshas taste buds.
I have to say that after the retreat I felt calm, chilled, lighter, lifted and clearer so I’m a big fan of the ayurveda approach. - It’s about finding your mind-body type or ‘dosha’ and treating your dosha with a holistic approach to achieve balance with the rightskincare, diet, and lifestyle.
- With vast benefits from using it, the Samaya Ayurveda Cleanser product is tailored to each dosha’s constitution and is completely natural, using organic oils.
What’s your Dosha:
The 3 dosha types are
- Vata
- Pitta
- Kapha
We all have one of these constitutions. We are more dominant in one type. For example I could be 80% Vata and 20% Pitta.
Samaya Ayurveda’s principle is about discovering your dosha type, to help you select the best SAMAYA skincare routine.
Want to know your Dosha type? Take the survey on the Samaya website >
The results for Vata are very typical of me:
“Energetic and creative in balance, but worried, tired and indecisive when out of balance. Often of slender build and suffers from cold hands and feet. Tends to have delicate dry skin and hair, which may need extra moisturising and nourishment to keep it glowing and healthy.”

How did Samaya Ayurveda’s Skincare Range evolve?
Abida’s family used pure oils and skincare when she was growing up. When she moved to London, she was unable to find any skincare brands that used the same quality or composition so she decided to design her own skincare range and worked with a team of pharmacists to support her on her incredible journey.
Abida coined the name SAMAYA to mean a ‘place of balance’ as sama means ‘balance’ in Sanskrit and alaya means ‘place or abode’.
So she put the two together to create samaya or ‘a place of balance’ because when the products are used you are transported to a place of balance.
Love this! Great way of coming up with a meaningful brand name.
Question & Answer with Samaya Ayurveda’s Founder, Abida
FreeFromProducts: If I just use the Vata Cleanser only, what difference does that make versus using the whole range (cleanser, facial oil, moisturiser, supplements together)?
Abida: “The products work well when used on their own but they are even more effective when used together. For example, the cleanser used on its own delivers deep hydration.
If you use the cream on its own it is moisturising and reduces the appearance of wrinkles as well as helps to even skin tone. The oil is also deeply moisturising and helps to reduce pigmentation and wrinkles.
We have had very positive feedback from people who use only the creams or only the oils or only the cleansers but the most impressive results have been seen from people who used the products all together.
If you skip the cleanser then you are not giving your skin the deep hydration and purification our oil-based cleansing balms provide. The creams and the oils will still deliver what they promise to but they are even more effective when used after our cleanser. Our supplements work from within to help achieve similar results.”
FreeFromProducts: Would this range work well with other beauty brands and are there any products it doesn’t complement?
Abida: They work well on their own and can be used with other brands but we have obviously not tested the various combinations so can’t comment on exactly how well they might work with other brands.
There is nothing in our products that prevents you from using it together with another brand’s products.
FreeFromProducts: How do customers find using one product versus using the whole range and if so what has the benefit been? I only use the cleanser at night – my skin is noticeably smoother and weirdly enough my sleep has improved. On the other hand – I have also used all 3 of your samples as a regime and noticed a remarkably improved difference!
Abida: The Testimonials on the website show reviews from many people who have used the products. Very impressive results!
The fact that you sleep better is not coincidental but probably linked to our inclusion of Ashwagandha, a stress-alleviating adaptogenic herb, in our Vata cleanser.
It’s also in our Kapha range. Several people who use our Kapha oil have commented that they sleep better with it. It’s a combination of the natural stress-relieving aromas and the actual Ayurvedic ingredients we use which are absorbed deeper than we realise and help balance us from within.
Is the Dosha important when selecting the right cleanser?
FreeFromProducts: I’m Vata, and am using a Vata cleanser. If I used a Pitta cleanser, would I get different benefits for my skin type?
Abida: No adverse reaction as our products are all-natural. They just won’t find it as relaxing as they would if they chose based on their scent preference which is closely linked to dosha type (rose – Vata, jasmine – Pitta, earthy – Kapha)
FreeFromProducts: What’s the difference between your range and other Ayurvedic skincare ranges on the market?
Abida: SAMAYA’a products are 100% natural, authentically Ayurvedic (we even export to India!) and contain clinically-proven actives that deliver results.
SAMAYA delivers effective skincare through a relaxing, holistic experience while maintaining its all-natural credentials. Our supplements work from within to help people achieve perfect balance and our skincare works topically so we employ a 360 degree holistic approach that delivers results.
FreeFromProducts: Tell us about any new products coming out..
Abida: We will launch our fruit ferment based enzyme exfoliants (that can be left on overnight!) in May 2018. These promise to be hero products, so keep an eye out for them!
Thanks for a really insightful interview Abida, it’s valuable for myself and my readers. Beautiful product range.
